The NFL can absorb the lawsuits. What will knock down the system and bring it to a grinding halt is when Colleges, and then High Schools start getting sued. Even though Football is the big money maker for Colleges, most operate on a pretty tight budget, especially after paying for other sports. High schools can't absorb the cost, and will just drop their football programs. Once the developmental system erodes for the NFL, it's just a matter of time before it fades away. This is a very pessimistic view of what may happen, but it is a very real possibility.

My hope is technology will find some solution, but then the cost may be more than some (or most) non-NFL programs can bear.

I've worked on a few football players at my practice, and they tend to have lots of soft-tissue damage and scar tissue buildup. One guy that used to play for the Chiefs told me that the average lifespan of a retired pro footballer is 66, due to the damage they do to themselves.

Glory on the field of battle has one hell of a price, doesn't it?

I think we should deregulate all safety regulations with concerns to professional level sports. They are professionals, are they not?

One last bit: The world is going to be one hell of a boring place when chess is the only allowed sport due to safety concerns.

checkers with the centers drilled out so the window lickers can still breath after they've been lodged in their windpipe?

This is so dumb. I'm a hockey player and we get hit jut as much as football players, and all I can say is if you don't like contact sports then don't play. Leave it to the guys who can handle it.

Fun side note: There's a similar debate going on in Canada right now, centered around the prevalence of brain disorders in retired hockey players.

The difference is, the proposals are better protection and harsher penalties for fighting. The debates always start off with 'OK, we know we can't get rid of the fighting...'

Yep, no way you can get rid of fighting

In my league, fighting suspends you for a few games. I play in two leagues though. One suspends you for a few games, the other gives you a game misconduct and kicks you out of one game.
