Ok so lets say I put in a bid on an item but end up getting out bid in the end. Then lets say that the high bidder backs out or otherwise does not follow through with the deal. At this point I am pretty relieved because I may have bid a bit more in my excitement than I should have. Am I, as the next highest bidder, obligated in any way to follow through with my bid and purchase the item? I searched ebay's FAQs but it is distinctly possible I missed something. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You are in a great position, there... No obligation to take their "second chance offer", but you can contact them and make your own offer.

Just be careful with second chance offers.. some sellers will shill bid their auctions up to increase the price.. then offer you a chance to buy it "offline" after the auction is over saying that the high bidder 'backed out' or something. They figure that if you chased the price a bit when you bid, you think you are getting a deal.. but for some reason then they want you to do Western Union... Don't EVER buy a product outside of E-bay this way.. you are more likely to get screwed doing that then any other thing. Paypal and Ebay will not help you if you get scammed. Now purchasing from a legitimate "Second Chance" offer through E-bay, you are in no way obligated to purchase the product at all. Oh, and don't respond to the e-mail they send, go to your E-bay account and transact all your communication there.. that way you know you are not being spoofed. There are guys that will do that too -- which is why you are seeing less and less the bidder list. People are impersonating the seller and offering bogus second chance offers through e-mails. You click on thier "link" and it takes you to a fake e-bay site and they get you to enter your paypal info and clean you out. Hope that helps. |

Yeah.. you are not obligated in any way to buy at your price. You can now reply with a... "You know, I no longer think it's worth XXXX, I will now only pay YYYYY" and see what they say. I figure you're not going to get it either way, so you might as well give it a shot at getting a better deal. CB

Oh... I did not know this. Nevermind then... Thanks for the correction. As you can see, it doesn't happen to me all that often. I just don't do the second chance offers. I'm always afraid of being scammed.

Nah.. second chance offers are not too scary as long as you don't follow links in your email. Just open up your ebay account in a new window, and see if you have a true second chance offer in your messages. If there is one there, it is safe and if you want to accept the offer, just use the links there. I've done it several times, and I've rejected the offers sever times. Just a matter of whether or not it's worth it to you.

Scamming is a big problem with second chance offers, as mentioned above. It got to the point where I ignore them all in case something fishy was going on. Forunetly, I only bid by sniping, and ONLY enter the "most I am willing to pay" to elliminate bid wars and shills. A different issue is when they shill you, then cancel there OWN shills to see what your high bid is. Ebay tries to prevent this by preventing cancelled bids within the last 24 hours. But the loophole is the seller can cancel his own shill bidder at any time, forcing the next bidder to be liable for payment. nick

1) If you were outbid on an item, and the winning bidder then retracts his bid before the auction ends, leaving you now as the winning bidder, you will be obligated to buy the item. 2) I have gotten some awesome deals thru 2nd chance offers. The key is dont bother with your email, thats where scammers troll. But when you are logged into your Ebay account, go to "messages", and if you have a 2nd chance offer there, its more than likely legit. There is the random hacker thats found an Ebayer that just clicks the X on their browser and doesnt log out of their account. But thats not as common as the email scammers. After years on Ebay, being scammed a couple times, I only pay thru Paypal using the Ebay checkout. |
