Breaking a sound barrier and exceeding the speed of sound are two very different things. You often have to do one before the other, but if the air is not dense enough to allow the proceeding force wave to build to a noticeable degree, then you are not limited in your acceleration due to it.

It's possibly a myth that he "fell" to Earth. With balls that massive the Earth likely was pulled to him.
