chopping fire wood

I don't know if many on here chop wood for their home stove or fire pit but I usually put some away in my shed in the fall to dry out over the winter to use in my fire pit the spring. Well I broke the wooden handle on my old ax and decided to buy a new ax. I bought a Fiskars X27 splitting ax and all I can say is wow, this thing is a beast. All you have to do is point it at the junk of wood and it splits itself (haha little exageration). Seriously though this Ax is awesome and the fiber comp handle is really strong. Anyways I just wanted to throw this up to any fellow lumberjacks.

When I get my own house I'm putting a fire stove in my living room. My girlfriend doesn't want one but I don't care. I love the warmth of a fire stove. I'll be cutting and splitting my own wood. I just wish I could find a whole bunch of some good hard wood to use around here. All we really have is juniper and while it burns fine I like mahogany or some other harder woods to throw in before I go to bed.

Birch wood burns great. It lasts a long time and give off a lot of heat. I'm hoping to install a wood burning stove in my basement next year.

Definitely. That was my second motivation behind this purchase.

I heat with wood almost exclusively. I split by hand I (I did rent a hydraulic once when I had a lot of wood).

I have a Fiskars splitting axe, I have an older model, I think it is a bit shorter than the one you have. Your are right they are excellent! They are lighter than a maul so you don't get tired out as much. They tend not to get stuck in the wood as well.

Tons of good info.
FYI if your basement is not finished/insulated you probably will not be happy.

When we moved in, the 1st thing I did was look for downed trees and started chopping everything by hand. Dragged them out of the woods and everything was across the backyard.

I used the fireplace last night, and turned the heat off in the house. 10 degrees in a little over an hour it climbed.

Thankfully at work, every golf car that's new come in wooden crates, so that gets brought home and burned in the winter

I think about heating with wood from time to time.

But then I remember it would involve me using a chainsaw more often and trips to the hospital are not cheap.

Being a firefighter helps, but ask around to your local FDs. We get calls all the time for trees down, and we carry saws with us, cut it up and most of the time, it's left on the side of the road.

I just go back and pick it up
