Books on space?

In my quest to learn more about space, I need to read some books on the topic... Any suggestions for someone with very little previous knowledge on the topic? Preferably something that my local library might have/be able to request, but throw out any suggestions you might have!!!

Do you wish to learn about "space", or rather all the interesting bits between the large parts of it?

Walk into your library, find the section on Astrophysics, open them at random to somewhere in the middle, and find one that doesn't make your brain feel like it has dribbled out your ear and is making a mess of your shoes after a paragraph or two.

For a GREAT history of Space Travel (up to Shuttle), check out "Countdown" by T. A. Heppenheimer. Mr. H is really good.

A very entertaining read about what happens to humans in space: Packing for Mars by Mary Roach.

"The universe in a nutshell" (illustrated) by Hawking is an excellent start. If you would like more - let me know.
