Brother Jerry, that is what a pilot is... Something made as a demonstration with the goal of it being accepted and funded for further development. The choice of marketing it on the web to drum up a fan base was merely an example of the entertainment industry adapting to modern viewer/market pressures. They've mentioned many times since talk about B&C started going around about the possibility of more being done, so I really doubt those involved would have thrown up their hands and said "Nope, sorry. That was all we wanted to do, and we're done with things now. You can take your money and shove it." if the network had offered them the money for it.
