Sounds like you may be at an airline. If so, you can't strike because of the Railroad Labor Act. I was with IAMAW when I worked at United Airlines. We ended up enduring a 2 yr contract negotiation. Finally the government had to step in and settle it. They (Bush admin) gave us the "average" for the industry - which was cool, because it was a bit more than we were asking for.

IAMAW is not a terribly powerful union, and they tend to bend over for the company with shocking regularity.
I don't work for an Airline, but I'm a metal worker (I won't discuss on line).

However this is true:

"IAMAW is not a terribly powerful union, and they tend to bend over for the company with shocking regularity."

I missed those when I moved to Colorado. I used to get them shipped out a few time a year. Glad to be back in the east again.

Petition wants Obama to save Twinkies - POLITICO.com

The whole secession petition thing has caused people who never knew about the White House petition website to go nuts with it. I saw one yesterday requesting the establishment of motorcycle "judges" ala Judge Dredd.

What's funny about this union I belong too, we can't go on strike. It's against union rules What's even more funny, if you aren't a union member, they still have to represent you when you are in trouble

I'm going to leave the union this yr. Since I'm not getting a rasie for the next 5 yrs, I have to start cutting expensise. They are the first to go along with iother deductables.

I'm still protected under layoffs and such. If I were to get laid off, that would mean a permanent closer.

You may want to check the rules real close. The IAMAW was the union at the defense contractor I used to work for. Yes, everyone in the company was represented, but that was because EVERYONE, even if they chose not to join the union, was required to pay dues. If you opted in, it was one price ($50-and-cahnge per month, IIRC), if you opted out, it was a lower price. Reason being, the contract (since it was federal) allowed them to declare a closed shop. If you wanted to work, you had to pay. It was a lower price since they can't legally charge you for the portion of the dues that would go to political contributions, but it's still a huge racket.

(Granted, that MAY have just been for the federal contract we had, and not for the IAMAW's own rules.)

'nuff said.

I'm sorry to see Hostess go, and sorry for all the 18,500 people (families) who will find themselves suddenly unemployed for the holidays.

However, I have always preferred Little Debbie - so I'll survive.

What is it with this union talk? This thread has more important things to discuss.
