Try to avoid anything producing much in the way of flammable or explosive materials/gasses as by-products. Accidentally creating a small explosive is often frowned upon. Also, deliberately creating any kind of explosive isn't really well received either.

Trust me, bringing a high powered multi fuel rocket engine to school didn't go over well for me, and that was ages ago. Probably worse now. (And I had teachers sign off on the report before bringing the thing in. Apparently they didn't think about just how big the dimensions listed in the report were.)

Also got into some trouble on just submitting a report on production of various high explosives for demolition and shaped charges. Didn't even bring any related materials to school, just the report. But still ended in me having to walk a few nice RCMP officers through a high school chemistry textbook and our physics text to show how it provided us with more than enough info to figure out such things.

You probably have the precursors already.

Silly putty is not a compound. Water is pretty cool though. Otherwise sodium bicarbonate can be interesting

I suppose Thermite is out of the question but absolutely awesome compound of powered aluminum and iron oxide.

Fe2O3 + 2 Al → 2 Fe + Al2O3

It's both flammable and inflammable!
