I think I hosed my fireplace

Yesterday my neighbor had a guy over to sweep his chimney. He offered to do mine at a rebate since was already on our street. Today I go to make a fire and its extremely smokey, like not enough air is getting in, but i see smoke flowing outside too. I use my fireplace quite alot and it was working fine last week. The damper was wide open but didnt help much. my fireplce is a Napoleon insert about 10years old. How does the damper work on these things? im thinking over looking it over and calling in another expert if i suspect something was damaged.

That IS odd. May have been a bird nest or something that got knocked loose. If you were not in Canada, I would have said "Turn off the A/C"... but... Canada..eh?

Call the dude back - also see if your neighbor had the same problem.

My grandfather always lit some newspaper (rolled up) and stuck it up into the chimney to verify proper airflow before lighting the main fire. Could have just been weird airflow...??? (we had a wood stove - no issues).

I found this on the Interweb:

My fireplace smokes a bit when I start a fire. How do I fix this?

If the problem corrects itself once the fire gets going, you've simply got a cold chimney. Cold air sinks. You can probably feel the air coming down when you arrange the wood. You need to warm the chimney up. Roll up some newspaper tightly and light the end. Hold your makeshift torch up the flue so the lit end is past the damper. This should help warm the chimney enough to reverse the draft. You'll be able to hear the reversal when it happens.

Make sure you have a window cracked open to help with the draft.

If loud pipes save lives imagine what bright pink helmets could do.

Are you sure the damper is all the way open? The damper basically either chokes out a flame or allows it to breath. When you close it off, you start to deprive it from getting air....when you open it up, more air means a hot and faster burning fire. For our sauna, if we have a damp wood that has been sitting outside, we leave the damper open so it burns better. If I grab dried stuff, I need to close it off almost completely because it burns waaaaay too hot and fast (to the point where the pipes glow a bright red). Double check the linkage system on the damper didn't get disconnected or that something like a nest fell on top of it.

Sorry I forgot to update this thread. This is my first insert type fireplace so Sunday afternoon I went poking around and pulled out the "tiles" that line the fireplace and sure enough on top there was like 4 cups of crap from the sweep. Scooped and shop-vac'ed it all out and did a quick test with paper and everything is working fine now.

thanks for the suggestions.
