Dude your a sophmore in HS and your asking whether to get a lathe or a car??? Obvious answer is car so you can drive your lady friend(s) around on dates, etc. You can always acquire a lathe later on but owning a vehicle even if it is a Triumph ups your coolness in high school through the roof. Plus it affords you freedom, now you don't have to rely on others to get to the PB field!

As a mechanic who works on a lot of old English cars (Triumph, MG, Aston, Austin, Jaguar, etc), the TR7 is honestly one of the last in that category of cars I would buy. They don't drive that nicely, they are finicky, parts are reasonably hard to find and fairly expensive. On top of that, you won't get much car for $1500 and will have to dump a whole lot more into it sooner than later (if not just to get it on the road).

I'd say get the TR7. You can gain valuable experience with a British car. You'll be throwing wrenches so often you'll be able to hit a beer bottle with a 9/16 from 50 yards. You'll discover a vast new lexicon of swear words you can impress your friends with. Most importantly the expense and rarity of parts will keep you entertained and leave you too broke for any vices or habits.
