Get a car, as having transportation makes it easier to get laid.

get the car...if you are going to be taking machining classes soon then after those classes you will have a much better understanding of what kind/size of lathe you would need

IMO lathe is much more expensive too...you need something that has a spindle bore of at least 1"...and then you still need to buy a quick change tool post, insert boring bars, and lots of specific tooling or a nice grinder + time + HSS blanks.

Lol, best reply yet. That being said... As an auto mechanic I'd work my way up to British stuff... Start with imports, then go to euro stuff, then British last when you need a real challenge. Skip domestics altogether, you'll get the same experience fixing your lawnmower

A lath will pay for itself many times over for many years to come.

yes a car can too if its a taxi.

You will be a taxi driver but none of your friends will pay you for the ride.

Here in PA its a real pain in the arse. I would skip it secondly you don't want a project you want transportation buy the newest car you can afford and maintain it regularly. Keep the projects for when you have some disposable income.

Now as for car or lathe, being a machinist / designer I say CAR. Once you get a job you can get a lathe later but one of the first questions on most interviews is "Do you have reliable transportation?" If you can't say yes you might not get the job you need to make the money that you can buy the lathe with later.
