[quote=incynr8]I think the worst money pit hobbies, are polo, yacht racing, combine demolition derby, and independant unsponsored road racing like SCCA...quote]

A year or two before my paintball rennaissance I was seriously thinking about getting into amateur rally (off and on road). It wasn't the cost of the vehicle as much as the repairs from damage (trees, rocks, etc.) that nipped that in the bud. Some of my wealthier pals, self-made and inherited, love messing around in boats. One guy wrote a check (A CHECK!) for 600K on a used boat last winter. A rule of thumb on boats is 10% annually of the purchase price for maintenance and operation.

Am i reading this right, as in, a demolition derby with combines (harvesters), if so, that would just be totally whacked man...
Especially since a new one cost $250,000+ and used ones are usually thrashed.

You are correct...these knuckle heads take combines...take the combine feature off the front so there aren't any spinning thresher parts flying around and then just bash into each other...a couple of us made the same comments you just did when we saw this for the first time a few months ago.. "Are they F'ing nuts?!?!? " that from a friend who's family is farmers in montana... you would have gotten the same expression had you used a gallon of water to wash your hands in front of a desert nomad.

I got to wonder if the combine derbys aren't partially sponcered by combine manufactureres. It would give them a way to test the durability a bit.

and hobbies I will never be able to afford but that make me drool

Aww, man, the derby would be MUCH more awesome if they left the reel on the front! You could tear a tire open with the sickel-bar!!

Yeah or have a sickle bar hit something, snap off and fly through the air. Too much moving death on the front of combines in their non stripped down form.

Includes a form of 'survival of the fittest', if they are, uh, dare i say... stupid enough to have a derby with combines, then i say let them run that risk.
