i was the official supply of "party favors" for delta tau delta waaaayyy back when i lived in mississippi. they showed me the secret handshake and everything. it was pretty cool. but that was the closest i ever got to being in a frat

I have to admit, I really loved hanging out with the sisters and brothers in both frats. I had a bunch of close friends in each one, so I ended up helping with a lot of the service stuff. Of course, I didn't do the super secret Sisterhood/Brotherhood meeting stuff.


As for people having issues with them, I've met my share of jerks who were both in and out of different ones. Yes, since it is a special club people can be elitist asshats, but not all of them are like that. It's the same generalization as saying anyone who doesn't join is some sort of crazy antisocial looser. People are people. Everyone is different.

I have some good friends in frats/sororities, I personally never saw the appeal of joining them. Some are (as pointed out) bros. Others are just regular people. Here is an example of the former.
One time my friend rented a room in a frat, (she didn't join, she was just renting) I was sitting outside the house with her, enjoying the nice day when this stereotypical douchebag bro, comes outside and starts harassing us. The conversation went something like this:
Bro: We are getting complaints of smoke upstairs you two need to leave.
Me:We have only been doing homework out here and besides I'm out of smokes.
Bro:...Well your not a member(referencing me) so it is time for you to leave.
Krissi: I'm renting a room here.
Bro: yea' and your room is in the back, if you want to sit outside go there.(essentially telling us to sit in the parking lot)

Bro then goes inside and I am about to follow him, but Krissi stopped me. Probably because bro alone could have kicked my ***,let alone all his buddies.

Frat for fraternity is one of the few abbreviations I do tend to use while typing. I think that came from my time in college when the brothers and sisters would use it when inviting me to whatever event via ICQ and AIM. (Yes, back in the day.)
