When I was a kid, we used to strip down to your underwear and see who could run out to the creek we lived by, jump in, and run back to the house. Slowest person bought pizza. I know there was a couple good polar runs around -30C back then. Fun times.

At a WW2 reenactment in Idaho two years ago we went out at 7am when it was -15 Farenheit. The extractors in several of our Enfield rifles froze so we couldn't cycle the bolt and some K98 firing pins shattered. We unwittingly crossed a snow-filled ditch and broke through the ice up to our knees... the water actually froze solid before it could seep into our boots. We had serious a couple of frostbite cases and one out o shape kid over-exerted himself, sweated up a storm and then started to go early hypothermia. We called the morning fighting after two hours (liability reasons), went back to barracks to thaw out and went out later when it warmed to a sweltering 20 degrees. Put the Battle of the Bulge in perspective... |

It was just a few degrees warmer than -50F on Monday. I think a few years ago it officially hit -50something. I don't remember the exact number. No windchill, just cold.

It was -48C (-51F) with th wind this morning in Saskatoon. It's so cold, your tires freeze in an oblong shape, and you get a bumpy ride till they thaw out on the highway.

2006 was a bad winter that's for sure. I lived off base in Copenhagen and couldn't get to work for over 2 weeks because of snow.
