Had a guy in High School like him...we called him Guff....for Guffaw. We got tired of his crap, so we went along with whatever he was saying, like if he said the sky was red, we really started agreeing with him...he caught on after a few months and settled down a bit. Guff stuck for years.

I agree with PSUNITRO - just walk away.

You get to a point in life, you learn to just walk away. Those people mean nothing. The One-Uppers, Know-It-Alls, etc. If you are associating for your entertainment then that's one thing. But one can never have a serious conversation or relationship with them.

Don't waste your energy. They aren't worth the time. You'll never get the resolution you are looking for.

Never get into an argument with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Ask for clarification and then ask for it in writing. I deal with enough people that I have flat out told some of them that if it is not written down it never happened because their memories of past events and mine are far removed from each other. This goes for promises made in the past as well.

You would be amazed how many conversations with sales people end when I ask for whatever they are promising or promoting in writing. Or they hand me a contract so complicated that I explain to them if they had to have a lawyer write it I am going to have to have a lawyer read it.

I like to let them dig as big of a hole as possible before destruction.

Heinous, these people are "create your own story" books that have come to life. Start up a conversation again and take the lead by suggesting rather than arguing. Come back once you've had him narrate an awesome story to share with us

That said, my brother's girlfriend's little brother is like that... Continuing to agree till he runs out of material happens rather quickly. Then I can have a regular conversation with him.

Sometimes people like this are just trying desperately to fit in by connecting to the subject you are discussing. They take a position and then don't know how to back down from it.

Is he otherwise socially awkward? Laughing at the wrong time/ talking to strangers etc

I'm not discounting that he could just be an obnoxious *******.

well, he's definitely an attention whore in some ways. you'd be talking about one thing with the group and he'll start a new topic in the middle of it that only he wants to talk about. like that's fine, but usually people wait until one topic is over first, you know. then if you try to steer the conversation back to the original topic he'll try to pull it back to his topic, and you get this see-saw competition going on where he's the only one on that side.

Correct. They aren't worth the time. Just nod say "oh" and uhhuh" and walk away. Don't let it be a pride thing.
