"Refinishing" an engraved surface on a caliper (tool, not brake)

I think this is the right place...

As I have been studying to become a mechanical engineer, I have become increasingly upset with the quality of tools my school provides. They're either broken, uncalibrated/poorly calibrated, or a mix of both. The people in charge have dismissed my claims. I also have a need for quality tools due my paintball business..

As a result, I decided to purchase some real tools of my own.
I chose a starrett dial caliper and a mitutoyo digital caliper that were both owned by an ex machinist and sold on ebay. I think I got a fair deal as long as I verify that they are within spec. They the starrett has hardened steel jaws and the other has carbide coated, so they should be fine.. Links to the two items are as follows.

Mitutoyo 8" Absolute Digimatic Caliper | eBay
Starrett 9" No 120A Dial Calipers | eBay

My question stems from the fact that he engraved his name into the jaw of the tools. I was wondering if it would be possible to have the non-measuring surface of the jaws refinished and engraved with my own name. I really do not have a clue where I would go for such a service.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
-Jake

someone who is good with a tig welder might be able to fill it up then you can fly cut it back down but your most likely going to loose the temper of the jaw on the starrett or maybe loose the carbide jaw on the digi. might be easier to just change your name. the other option is I know starrett is pretty good with getting you replacement parts maybe you can get a new body from them. last but not least just put your name on the reverse side.

For a super clean job:
found someone with a surface grinder. ( This: Google Image Result for http://www.thesurfacegrinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/surface-grinder14.jpg)

Easy to do ( At my opinion ) and surface grinder can do a very clean job.

Just ask him to dont grind the carbide section of the mitutoyo caliper.

Hm. I am assuming the jaws would be vulnerable to its environment then.. correct?
Is there anyway to have that area coated with something to protect it?

Might just end up being cheaper to buy a new jaw :s

I picked up an old set or calipers in a lot of tools that wash't engraved too deep. They cleaned up with some simple jeweling.

Unless your tools are hard chromed, which is fairly un common, they will be vulnerable to the environment anyway. Just keep them lightly oiled.

I could plunge burn EDM a Oval over the name, that would leave a nice spot for your name, and not take any other material off the rest of your jaws. Your Initals could also be burned into it to. I do this to all of my measuring tools that I buy used. You could surface grind it (which I can do), but depending on how deep the engraving, it might take off more than you would want.

If your interested pm me, mabyee work out a trade deal.
