Fiddling About with Wacom and Gimp

This is the first finished image I've ever done in the digital format (discounting some MS Paint work I've done). I've fiddled about with techniques and attempted a few prior incompletes, but this is the first one I've actually sat through and finished.

[EDIT] Reworked image:

Original for comparison:

It's no masterpiece, being just a simple attempt at character design, and I've got a lot to learn, but I kinda dig how it turned out.

Thoughts and critiques on what I can improve next go-around would be appreciated.

the head probably shouldn't connect to the neck that far rearward.

and the colors seem to make the character look flat somehow, unless that's the look you're going for.

it's good overall...

Hm. You may be right regarding the head. Rolling it back a bit kinda threw me off.

Wasn't going for a flat look, so much as stylized. I only used ~3 tones for each color (and only a few colors, really) to get the shade and tint effects, and used the airbrush tool to soften the edges. I kinda like the "separated tones" look, vs. smooth fading. But, now that you mention it, I could stand to give her a bit more dimension. I think I can fix that tomorrow.

i looked at it a bit more. i *think* it looks flat because the flesh color's bright-dark difference is not as much as the rest of the colors. i mean look at the sock's shady side vs bright side for example.

Yeah, I agree. I threw some more value in it, and we'll see how badly I messed it up...

Lol, relax. True though it may be, I had the pencil work and design in my head well before that thread. That's why I commented. I dig this type of girl.

The resemblance is uncanny, though.

welcome to the world of Wacom, a great way to get into art, without all the mess. Nice start, I hope you enjoy using all the features of the tablet, get to know how to use all its components for shortcuts. I'm guessing you have the bamboo model? I can't remember its features, but if it has a ring button, you can usually program a lot of good shortcuts into it.

I've never used GIMP, but I hear its a great little free program. It saddens me to say I hear the words "self taught" from many artists and illustrators when I read webpages and bios, so never feel like having no formal training is a bad thing when it comes to art. You can learn the basics anywhere, even if it is nice to have a guiding hand. Just have fun with it, but I will give you this piece of advice: The answer is always contrast

Keep up the good work.

Pretty decent work for a first shot
great job on it and just keep practicing

As a bit of advice there are lots of great tutorials on using Gimp on Deviant Art,
from cleaning up the line art to shading, coloring and using gradients and plenty of other stuff to help ya truly make your art Bad@$$
