A question for folks living in or have been to ALASKA

Earlier this week was my anniversary and I am grateful to have taken a little road trip to Nantucket to celebrate year #3. While there I did the tourist thing and embarked on a whaling tour.

I had mixed feelings about it but was pleasantly surprised to have seen the whales (Minke?). Not many but they are such magical creatures.

Unfortunately I didn't see any humpbacks but now I want to start planning to visit Alaska or any other whaling towns where they are most/more prominent.

So having said this.... would Alaska be worth my time (if so what time of year is best)?

or should I go somewhere else (and what time of year is best to visit)?

I live just south(20ish miles) of Alaska and I can tell you the landscape is beautiful. It is a part of the world that I recommend every go to. Sometimes you luck out and see whales and sometimes you don't. I know locally that whale watching season is over due to shortened days and poor weather.

Vancouver Island is a great place to whale watch too, orca's and others, haven't been in years, but a group from work went last year and had a blast!. While you are there, go surfing at Longbeach!

Humpbacks and Pacific Grey Whales too!

Alaska - Early to Mid June thru early September
Hawaii - January thru March/April - mating/calving

If you are going to take a "once in a lifetime tripto see Humpbacks" I would recommend Hawaii

Alaska is definitely worth a visit if you haven't been here before. There are plenty of whale watching day cruises available up here in most of the coastal towns (Valdez, Seward, Homer, Juneau, etc...). You can see humpbacks and Orcas most of the summer. In Anchorage (Alaska's largest city), you can often see belugas from shore in Cook Inlet just by taking a short drive south on the Seward Highway.

Yeah, there are a few places to fly into, or a few ferries to get over there. I went whale watching out of Victoria a few years ago, it was pretty fun.
