Blank-firing prop guns are considered very dangerous, and as such command a very high liability insurance from the studio.

So 99% of the time, you are seeing either a dummy gun with a computer generated "flash", or a dummy gun with a "propane" flash.

The F/X version generate no sound at all, so the studio get to add whatever they want in post..... and yes, they add in whatever is the "coolest" sound. The propane versions make the wrong sound, and is typically dubbed in post as well.

It all used to bother me when I was younger. Not as much as when movies use paintguns as "futuristic firearms". lol
Even if they are firing actual blanks (or even more rare, real live rounds), they usually don't directly record the gun's audio because of how badly it will clip and distort compared to the actors and other stuff. So even those will be a post processing audio pass.

However, I think a more interesting (and possibly far shorter) thread might be one on shows or movies that handle weapons very well.

You mean the squealing tires on the dirt road?

One of my peeves is the bullet leaving a gun, with the case attached.

We were watching a B sci-fi show the other day, their big guns were Tippmanns without loaders.

Another favorite is the gun battle in a small house with a normal conversation going on, like you would be able to hear.

I believe we have no SMEs on anything in that sentence but guns, horses and sleeping.

As such, those other things may be getting executed incorrectly but we don't know.

I forgot spells, Heinous is a master on spelling.

don't worry, none of them know how a real gun works. trust me i've seen them in the movies they mishandle all their guns. i bet that's how the allies won.
