you know there are currently 25 different playing card projects running

I from what I understand the custom card thing is supported by a collector subculture that only back custom playing card sets.

I have a love/hate relationship with Kickstarter. I love that it helps some innovative projects become a reality. I hate that it is a very easy way for scammers and flakes to grab some quick cash. As long as you are fine with making a donation with no guarantee of receiving your "reward" Kickstarter can be cool. I've been quite pleased to support several projects that became a reality, but a couple projects I've backed never happened and the people involved simply disappear. The wronged backers are always outraged but find it difficult to get any sort of satisfaction, or a refund.

I'd really hate to see a project get hyped here and then burn a bunch of people.

This is what I was wondering about when I first found out about it. How do you ensure people get something for their money? On most postings, I imagine it isn't too hard to see something coming from the project. But, on others, I can see how you are basically an investor if things don't work out and a customer if they do.

This may be one of the best ways of describing it I have read. You are taking all of the risks of bringing the product to market with virtually none of the rewards. Sure you get the product but you could have had that anyways had it taken traditional methods of getting to market and was successful.
