if you go to The Louvre Museum. what out for steps since all are marble. over the years weight has cause some steps to sink in a little. do not want any one fall. since funny watching people trying not to fall do to fact did not know some steps have sunk in with dip to them.

The best thing to see in Paris is the bus ride out, drive down to Avignon, Marseille or Cannes.

Touristy isn't so bad in Paris. I would recommend seeing the Tower light up at night. There are a couple places around the Tower that are neat. Rue de Clar (spelling) is an open air street market NE of Eiffle, good place for a casual meal or snack. Directly across the river from the tower is a square with decent scenery. I was disappointed with the Louvre, too many lines. There are some good restaurants on boats along the river.
I would really try to get out to the coast, Normandy, or at least Caen. The abbey at Mont St. Michel is awesome down south.

Can't help with Barcelona.

Normandy was pretty awesome for me. I was there on the 50th anniversary. Very memorable experiance for me since WWII is something that has so much to learn about.

Not exactly off the beaten path, but Sainte Chapelle in Paris is not to be missed in my book. Some of the most amazing architecture and stained glass in the world. Utterly astounding.

Well most of what I did as a young man you are strictly forbidden to do now since you are married ;p
Paris to me was the Filthiest and Rudest city I have ever visited.
I did enjoy getting stuck in a elevator for over a hr with a bunch of germane tourists on the Eiffel tower though. They passed around some bottles and we where quite plastered and singing German songs by time they released us.
The one thing I always made several days for was to go see the Louvre. Always enjoyed that place. It now appears that you can get a Free Museum pass that will let you into over 60 of the museums and attractions so that may be something for you to goggle.
The flea market was okay and it had occasional deals but mostly crap. If you go there watch out for the little one and your wallet.
The river boat rides where always enjoyable as well.

Barcelona has a ton of stuff to do that can be found just be walking off a main plaza.
My Favorite plaza was the Plaza DeMayor. Lots of history right around there as well as places to just sit and enjoy some Ice cold Sangria. If you eat outdoors there it is wise to order a Turkey leg to beat the bums off with that will try to steal your food. That was a adventure in and of its self.

Just go with the flow and have a good time.
