Heading to Europe for a week... What to do in Paris and Barcelona?

I mean... Something different. Who's been over there or who is over there, and what is there to do that's different.

I know I can waste my time with the tourist crap... But is there something better that I should be doing?

Week after the tour de france, so I'll miss that sadly.

Looking for ideas!

Paris is pretty cool to do the Tower if you've never been.

When I was in Barcelona we toured some glass blowing art studios, really cool.

Lots of art to explore in both areas. Of course, I haven't been to either place in over 20 years.

Actually, the tourist crap is pretty interesting in Paris.
Go the stair option as far as you can on the Eiffel tower, instead of the elevator.

Barcelona, go to Las Ramblas, it's an interesting street to walk down, although very "touristy" as you say, it's really happening at night. Also La Sagrada Familia, that's a MUST. I only saw the outside which is all you need to see. As far as the food in Barcelona, Tapas and Paella are the way to go, the Squid sandwiches are the bomb too. Don't worry about using Spanish in Barcelona, they speak Catalan and prefer you use English. Barcelona was my favorite in all of Spain. Go to the Mall, (I know, I know), it's and old bull fighting arena that they converted to a mall, since Barcelona outlawed bullfighting.

One word: Verdun.

There's lots of places to see where "The Great War" was fought. Some places still have grown-over but still visible cratered landscape, and trenches.

Guys like you and me Carter grew up with WWII, but not much of WWI, which began 100 years ago. There's a lot of history there that should be seen.

Farmers still plow up 100 year old shells and helmets in their fields. An entire generation was sacrificed there for the "War to End All Wars".
