$18 Million a year. To play soccer.

The unexpected star of the World Cup finals, Colombia’s James Rodríguez, has signed for Real Madrid for a reported £63m.

The 23-year-old follows the signing of another key midfielder from the World Cup, Germany’s Toni Kroos who joined for a bargain £20m, and will be given the No10 shirt which was last worn by Mesut Özil.

He passed a medical in the Spanish capital on Tuesday morning and has agreed a six-year deal at the Bernabéu. Real Madrid will present him to the fans in their stadium at 7pm BST.

A Real Madrid statement read: “Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Monaco for the transfer of James Rodríguez, who will join the club for the next six seasons.

29.2 Million a year to play baseball - arguably the only difference is Cabrera may be in the discussion as one of the best hitters of all time by the time it is done. I am not certain how that compares to the soccer deal.

He's not getting paid that much, that's how much Madrid paid Monaco to transfer him. It was $108 million to buy his rights for the next six years.

His annual salary in Monaco was closer to $1 million a year before endorsements.

I love how people bag on soccer players. There are only five soccer players in the world who make over $20 million a year in salary alone. But I guess soccer isn't a "tough" sport to play.

Those rights things are rather unique. At least compared to North American sports.

Soccer is as tough to play as it is to watch. For the record, I was one who was watching the US-Portugul game.

Honestly, I think that about every professional athlete.

Yeah, the whole buying and selling of players is completely foreign to north American sports. I couldn't imagine what NBA, NFL, and MLB stars would be "sold" for if that process happened here.
