Best part is that it is free (but make sure you get it from the microsoft website).
This exactly. MSE is also lightweight and won't nag about anything.

Had a bunch of commercial accounts on AVG Business versions, now I've got them on MSE or TrendMicro. AVG has gone down hill the last few years across all of their products.

plus Microsoft licenses the Kaspersky a/v engine so the Russians are paid off. Kaspersky has one of the best a/v engines out there and one of the best security labs in the world. Their own Kaspersky branded product kinda has a ****ty management interface depending on the version. So going with the MS free security essentials is the way to go.

No matter how good your a/v is you can still get viruses so don't spend any extra money on an a/v product thinking its better, just surf smart.

I've been using the free version of avg for almost a year now with no problem. I tried using avast but for some reason I can't get it to work properly. I don't do a ton of browsing on my PC so I'm not really worried.

Sorry but the idea of that Microsoft has a vested interest because it will make Windows look good is a farse... Let me present to you "Internet Explorer" as a prime example.

Or how about "Windows 8" for the younger generation..."Windows ME" for some of us older folks.

Microsoft has never been a company that worried about image.

While MSE is good and it is somewhat effective. Microsoft has never staked their reputation on being able to stop, identify, and eradicate malware. Avast, Trend, McAfee, Symantec....they have...if they start to fail to do what they have claimed to do for years then they might as well go back to selling lemonade. Microsoft fails with their MSE and they simply drop it from the product line and keep going with a revamp of Minesweeper or perhaps one day they will actually update Notepad
