Advice for 18 year old you?

My wife and I just took a road trip to Savannah, GA (awesome little town if you've never been) and in our random conversation on the way back she posed the question, "If you could give one piece of advice to yourself when you were 18, what would it be?" Not to sound corny, but I like my life now, so my first thought was about what advice I could give that would not screw up where I am now? So with that in mind, what advice would you give yourself? Maybe you would want to change where you are now, I hope most would not.

If you have the attention span of a nat, feel free to skip this. My answer was that I would say to value my family more. Three years ago my mom unexpectedly passed away. Ever since then I have wished I had talked to her more often. A little background info, my parents divorced about 15 years ago and I spent about 9 years in the Navy. The Navy stationed me where I wanted (for 3 years anyhow) and in that time I often called my dad daily. My mom, on the other hand, was more like weekly, if that. Frankly I felt like I got trapped on the phone with her, so I would limit how often I called. Pretty selfish looking back. So that's my advice, put more value on family. Call them, talk to them. There is probably never enough you could say to loved one you have lost, but that is why I think it's important to try. Since this story feels like a bit of a downer after typing it, here's a cute funny kitten

Advice to self: Accept that 3-way offer by the "not quite up to your standards" girls, b'c you'll never get another chance. Damnit.

Don't flirt with breaking the law. It won't work out well. Even though the community service had merit and connected you with some great people, it is still stupid.

Advice to self: Skip the drugs, no answers, just more questions. Oh and mental health issues down the road.

A-f***ing-men! That along with pursuing joining the Coast Guard even if my mother disproved of it.
