DIY smoke bombs

D.I.Y massive smoke kit

Looks like fun, and pretty cheap. Anyone try anything like this before?

I tend to stay away from anything smoke related with paintball. Saw a guy get his finger nearly blown clean off from one, and that was enough for me.

I think a lot of fields don't allow them due to the possibility of fire.

Not for paintball. No hot smoke allowed at my field. Certainly would not approve of me lighting a fuse. I just think it would be fun to smoke out my neighborhood.

Unsure, as they need saucepan & wooden spoon...

While I'm sure you could melt together the potassium nitrate & sugar, there's no reason to. The stuff works fine in powder form.
And when I say "works fine" I mean a tremendous amount of smoke when burning. Like a small (one lb) coffee can will fill a school auditorium.
Unfortunately, it burns hot. Real hot. Like melting glass temps.
Totally unsafe on a paintball field.

I must have made hundreds of these types back in the 90s. You definetly get a vastly better smoke if you melt the ingredients together. However, I would NEVER use a hot pan. I've always used the microwave. Same results, no risk.

Anyway, you get vastly better results if you also use baking soda and wax. I assume thats what is in this kit. It was burn slower, with more smoke, and not nearly as hot. Back in the day, we would use crayons as a source of wax, since it also added color. But, still pretty hot. I nearly burned down the CORAM Paintball Field, and have never build any since.

^ Same. Back in the late 90's there was a website "po'mans paintball" where I learned about them. They warned about the extreme heat while burning so we would place them in cinder blocks pregame and make them an objective. Light them if you could reach them kind of thing. (it was outlaw on our property, we were as careful as we could be with something like that.)

It's sugar and saltpeter,50/50 mix melted together
I've made alot of these pre 911,they're very dangerous to make
The fumes will make you sick and they burn hot enough to melt thru a cookie sheet. The chances of it catching fire while melting the two together is fairly high
That being said they're lots of fun and make a sh!+ton of smoke

Had to pause a game once while everyone beat out a fire. That was fun...
