who's a geek? I'm a geek...

Soo...

Some of you may know that I do the sci-fi convention thing on the side. I ran one for 10 years, and this is the first year in a decade I'll not be part of the business of SheVaCon, but just attending.

So I need a good costume. We've got heavy support from the Star Wars community this year, and since I'm not really up to vac forming my own set of stormtrooper armor, I'm going the Jedi route.

Jedi's gotta have a lightsaber right? Old Rob ain't gonna be happy with some mass produced thing, especially since I'm not going as any of the established characters. So I had to make my own (what every Jedi does when he achieves mastery anyway)

Weathering this was kind of a pain. When I started out it was WAY too shiny.

Nifty "battery level" lights.

Oooooo... Blue... This one is bright enough to blind a fellow.

...And finally, the "charging port"

I have a fiber optic and lucite blade that's not attached for these pictures, and it's run by a laser diode that lights things up VERY bright. I need to score one of those laser warning stickers just for grins and giggles. All the parts/pieces/bits and bobs are made/put together by myself. I think if this computer thing ever falls though, I may become a prop maker.

Very cool!

I was going to suggest looking here.... but no need if you don't want armor.

The Star Fortress

Definately get pics of the entire costume... and a dark room shot of the blade attached to the lightsaber hilt.

Nice work!

Reminds me, I have to get started on 2 swords for my wife, as she does the whole anime convention thing. Sadly, most prop katana are those cheesy plastic deals, so I went and found her a real sword, modified it close to the original, and made a composite blade that looks real, but isnt.

She just happens to cosplay a character who carries 3 swords at all times, and now for costume variety, I have to make 4...

Yup, electrical conduit, pvc, rubber, brass and chrome plumbing parts, some pieces from a clock, a microphone jack, various electronic stuff, 2 different sets of batteries, and a whole lot of labor.

If I ever meet you in person, I'll give you a wedgie, a noogie, and then steal your lunch money. Then I'll take your glasses and put em on top of the lockers.

So the brass accents are from the clock right? Might just have to find some clock hands to cut up and solder onto some custom guns. Nice work

I'd just steal the lightsaber. It would go great with my Imperial Tattoo.

On a sidenote, that BSG holster looks like it'd go well with a PMI-1...
