For all we know, the entire purpose of that satellite was to give a good excuse to try shooting it down, and the hydrazine tank wasn't even full. It's not like the Pentagon is going to say what the purpose of the vehicle was..

However, 1000 lb of hydrazine could cause some serious problems if it did survive reentry and landed somewhere useful, like in a city or livestock area. Chances of it both surviving reentry and landing on land, let alone populated land, are pretty darn small. It's more likely there was just sensitive equipment on board.

May I suggest to the pentagon that in the future they place a few pounds of C4 on the satellite wired to a remote, and save us tax payers a few million dollars and all the drama.

Why not ?

It's not like Steve Fosset or Mr Branson are going to take a quicky trip into orbit helping them selfs to some high tech bounty.

What was on board or maybe ? ... hell they could of had a E.T. egg to hatch in space ?
Use your imagination and know what ever it was in piece or whole won't be coming down intact.

Yep. There are tons of stories about weapons systems, but that does not mean the public gets access to the inside workings of them. The same goes for the spy satelites.
