| The first time I dropped mine was because, subconciously, i was expecting it to feel the same as the bottom-heavy 250-pound Nighthawk I learned on. The other times were because I leaned it for some reason or another, and it decided to keep going despite the 130 pound guy trying to keep it up.

| wow long thread...... well..for my 2 cent..... Get a good brand name helmet, shoei or arai come to mind. They are also quieter when you ride too. Stay away from chinese knockoff even if they are DOT certified, those thing tend to create really loud noise when you ride too fast. Also stay away from those 1/2 helmet unless you are really sure of yourself, they don't really protect much at all. Get a full face if possible and don't ever ever buy used helmet, you never know what happen to it before you bought it. Jacket, riding boot, and pant are not really a must, but you should get something comfortable to ride in, and be able to protect you from scrapes. Last but not least, keep in mind even with all those gear if you ride recklessly your jacket will not protect you from a broken arm. And don't split lanes if you can, depend on local law and condition. It's legal here in california, however there are people who hate lane splitter. My former motorcycle instructor is one of them, he ride a gold wing, but hate lane splitter, so he would pull into their path to scare them if they try to split down the freeway at speed much higher than the speed limit. Bike: GS500 of the SV650 is a pretty good starter bike. Even the Ninja 250 is pretty good, but i like the SV650 a bit more. Beside that, try riding a buell blast, it's pretty comfortable for long driving, and have enough noise to warn people that you are also sharing the road. |

| One of the big advantages, if you have a small bike and it's legal, is lane splitting. I'm pretty sure it's still, technically, illegal to do it in most places at the speed limit. I never would. What if someone changes lanes or simply drifts? During a traffic jam, though, it'd be nice.

| Active Member | I know that lane-splitting is legal here. It's not something I'd do though. I'm definitely gonna get a full face for sure. Everything else seems too open. I'm keeping my eye on an ebay listing of a non-running 1980 maxim 650 for $450. From what the owner said, the battery is dead. So that's probably what I'm gonna go for. |

I love teh one main road here, its 2 lane, and when people park on the one side, it makes the one lane about 3/4 the normal size, and really only lets bikes through.
