What are some common brands of mead so that way I know what I am looking for when I go and get some? Thank you

I usually buy Bunratty. If you don't see it on the shelf, ask if they can order it. Most places can. You're looking at ~$20 a bottle. BUNRATTY MEAD AND LIQUEUR CO. note, I HAVE seen wine flavoured with honey advertised as mead. I personally don't like this. It's kind of thin. I prefer the thicker, really honey tasting stuff. A friend of mine also brought a honey schnaps(sp?) home from somewhere in germany. It's wonderful! He doesn't pour it often.

It doesn't help you if you're in the US, but in Canada you can order excellent mead from my local meadery (minimum half case order).

Bunratty was the first mead I had while travelling in Europe. It might be the most popular, or at least the most well known, though not my particular favorite. There is a good list of commercial meads here Rabits Food makes really nice meads, though I have a hard time finding a variety of meads, as most meaderies are on the west coast, or mid-west. Very few on are the east coast, especially the north east. A good introduction might be braggots, cysers, and Pyments. Those are often made by larger breweries, cideries, and wineries so are sometimes more common. But as Finnigan pointed out, quite often they are not actually meads, but FLAVORED with honey AFTER the fermentation has finished. nick

Actually, there is some stuff in the East there. DogFish Head in DE, and Long Island Meadery. LI Meadery won't deliver outside NY. I'll have to have some sent to my Mom's.

I get Redstone all the time here (Redstone Meadery) in Denver. Pretty good stuff, with lots of varieties.
