I've been using a cheap Bic, simply because it doesn't have that lighter fluid taste (maybe we're doing something different? I can tell, a little) and I can't find proper boxes of matches. Much as I love my Zippo, it's retired from cigar and pipe use.

Ordered a butane pipe lighter off eBay. Tools like this, I'm a stickler for quality.

Got a meerschaum churchwarden-style pipe, too. Came in today, hours away from my order from the Tinderbox, and I'm going to be running some Black Russian through it this evening.

Tried running some Black Russian and Honey Maple together in my wood pipe. My friend's roommate thought someone was baking cookies.

PS: anyone buying a pipe--DO NOT let pipe sweetener contact meerschaum. Clean out the stem only.

I too hold the traditional sherlock shape close to my heart. I prefer mine in glass though.

Well , that odd feeling you're experiencing is idiocy.
I paid way too much money for those to ever put anything illegal in them.
You sir , owe me an apology for your asinine assumptions about my person. You know nothing about me or the reasons behind my collection of all things glass art.

What are you scared of pipes for ?
What make mine tools of drug use and yours so holy ?
Do you buy paintball guns just to menace people ? Im just going to assume you do since you assume all pipes that don't look like some carved log or hideous corn cob are for "dopers". Sorry I dont have any "gran pappy" pipes to share.

This is what I get for trying to share ?

Is the one with the Sherlock face on it glass? It looks like closely fitted wood from the picture.

Have you ever used a briar or a meerschaum? If so, what would your analysis be of the differences in smoking between the glass and the more conventional materials?

I'm not sure I could smoke out of the last one. I can certainly see the artistry of it, but it REALLY looks like something an alien would come at me with during a probing session.

Chill, wood. That's the 1st thing I though too. I've never seen anybody smoking tobacco out of a glass pipe. They're normally associated with that other stuff so it's not an ignorant assumption.

So like Robert said, what's the glass like? Does it get hot?

And oh yeah I use a pipe Zippo and don't notice any off taste.

Back on the topic of specific tobacco blends, anyone have any other tips for choosing a good aromatic? I recal some very good pipe smells as a youngster, but nothing I have tried has lived up to my hopes. I think I'm going to try to pick up some of that "Black Russian" that was mentioned though.

The one with the sherlock face is glass.
Lots of people think its wood upon first glance and then when they pick it up , they think its ceramic. But its glass.
The last one pictured is by an artist named Pakoh who was doing a take on traditional Chinese pipes. His brother actually did the Sherlock faced one. Theyre both master of glass sandblasting.

I have smoked Meerschaum pipes before. A close friend of mine from France who immigrated to the United States was always using Meerschaum. Apparently its still widely used in Europe. It was always a great pipe to use. Always tasted clean and was easy to clean. He was always using a Meerschaum chillum though and it was way too harsh. I never got too into pipe tobacco. I was always a cigar guy. Still am.
I collect now as an extension of my glass collection. The pipe is a fine form like marbles , goblets , vases , paperweights etc (which I also have a large collection of).

I have to say though , nothing compares to a glass pipe for functionality. But , like I said , I refuse to even put tobacco in most of my pipes , let alone anything that could cause me to lose them permanently. I take it pretty seriously. Ive got a rather large collection of functional glass and most people just dismiss it as pot stuff instead of appreciating it.

Thanks for taking the time to actually see through stereotypes and see them for what they are. Im sure it means alot to the people who made them too.

Yeah , I know it is. I guess I should expect it by now. Its just kind of a bummer people cant appreciate it for what it is. Sorry for jumping on you DeTrevni.

As far as lighters go , I don't know how you guys light up your pipes with Zippos.
Bic was a great brand but they just dont cut the mustard as far as number of lights goes.
Best bet is DJeep for the money. Or , get yourself a nice stainless steel torch lighter. Not that great for pipes but for cigars they are a must.
