| Endearingly quirky | I forgot that I had sent you some with the Shocker. We'll have to work out another trade so we can ship each other some new stuff to try.

| Endearingly quirky | Ok here's my small collection so far: ![]() The little meerschaum in the case had a tiny bowl. Hard to keep it lit and only good for 5-10 minutes. So I did what any tinkerer would do and busted out the Dremel. Opened it right up, and it's much better now. Don't cringe, it worked fine and you can't tell except that the inside of the bowl's not polished anymore. The big one on the bottom left came from mustangii as part of a trade. I swear I can keep it going for 1 1/2 hrs or so. Obviously I'm nowhere close to being the whore that Ed is, but who knows what'll happen.

| Just got myself a cheapo wood pipe and a sampler of aromatics from Tinderbox. They all sound tasty. If the pipe sticks with me, I'm getting myself a Churchwarden. Not too expensive, and I love the long stem. Probably better quality than the Chang Feng one I've got coming to me.

| Endearingly quirky | So I stopped by the local Tinder Box last night to pick up some different blends. I told the guy (who's getting to know me pretty well) I want to try an English blend. Sir Brass had given me a tin of Maltese Falcon when he was out for POG day, and it's a pretty harsh English blend. I wanted to try something a little smoother. So he directed me towards a blend called 'Sherlock'. I also picked up 2 oz of 'Black Russian'. So last night I packed a pipe with Sherlock. Halfway thru I dumped it out into my back patio chimnea. Just can't get used to it. As it smoldered in the chimnea it smelled like somebody was smoking a cigarette. Yecchh. I guess English just isn't my style, which to pipe snobs is like saying I'd rather shoot an Ion than a CCM. Now the Black Russian, on the other hand, was like smoking a vanilla creampuff. I could almost taste the sugar on my tongue. It'd be a good choice for somebody's 1st time.

| The Brown Guy! | I will have to look into the Black Russian. Thanks Curt. Now to settle on a starter pipe. Found a few in the $20-$30 range. I don't want to spend much in case I don't like it. Might get it ordered tonight.

| Endearingly quirky | You can get good pipes in that range. My 1st was only $29 and it was perfect for me. It's now in Carter's posession and he's enjoying it.

| Seasoned Member | I went to Tinderbox last night, and got some new tobacco. I didn't like the english blend I'd tried before (Maltese Falcon), but the tobaccanist there gave a good arguement for english (virginia + latakia), and I did notice that aromatics smelled good but didn't have much taste (the smell gave it the appearance of taste, since taste and smell are very intricately linked senses). Well, I tried 3 blends (love being able to sample a bowl for free): McClellan 5150, which is an english blend with some black cavendish for smell, and LOVED it. Sweet smell, and light taste, but TASTY. I also tried one called Sherlock's Favorite (or something like that) which was virginia + latakia + turkish, and I really liked that as well. And I finally bought a tin of something called Frog Morton on the town, and I really liked that english blend as well. It was like smoking a BBQ, not just the BBQ smoke

| Very successful thread! It's good to see this kind of response. I was wondering recently, what do you use to light your pipes? I use wood matches whenever possible, but have used a Zippo from time to time, and was thinking about picking up that Zippo/Peterson Pipe combo. Reason I mention this, is a lot of people swear Zippos give pipe tobacco a putrid taste, but I haven't noticed it. Maybe it's because I let it burn for a few seconds first... Thoughts? |
