Not only did the 17 year old get 8 months in Pinellas County jail,
but he got 5 years probation, 500 community service hours, and drivers license suspension for 3 years.

Thats a lifetime for a 17 year old.
I dont see how he will be able to behave for 5 years.
He will get 5 years in a Florida State prison if he violates probation.
Jail wont be that bad for him, theres no lifers in there, but he will be fresh meat in prison. Theres animals in prison that have nothing to lose.

I still haven't found anything saying the passenger is a veteran.

If you go buy the state maximums yes, if you go by history no. If he was some no name person without a super rich family he wouldn't have gotten jail time.
