Thanks.
take up smoking. it will deaden your senses and you won't notice the smell anymore...

besides - smoking is a tough-guy thing; takes a real MAN to kill themselves slowly. only punks use a gun shot to the head...

Hey guys,

Thanks for all of the help so far. Right now I'm going through a friend who will be my roommate so he found out about five days ago. I was busy with graduation stuff so I didn't find out until 2 days ago when we sat down to talk about it. I have until the 15th until I have to move out of my current place.

Right now the plan is to talk to the management. However, if push comes to shove I'd rather not have to as I'm getting a hell of a deal. $150 a month for my own room, washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc. all only about 8 blocks from campus and 4 from work. So while I'd like the management to take care of it, when you get down to it I'd rather spend a little out of pocket then to lose the place before I've got it.

Thanks again for all the help. And I'll try the febreeze and locating a HEPA vaccuum.

if you wash the walls and do a good steam cleaning of any carpets, it should remove most of the smell. (A lot of cigarette smoke ends up on the walls - the smoking room at AT&T was so bad the joke was that if you forgot your cigs, just lick the wall...)

you can also mix a little odoban (brand name) in with the warm water 1 part to 10 and it will also help

AH! College housing....so much makes sense now. Long hours of XBox, chain smoking and pizza.

Wash those walls! It is obvious to do the carpets, but smoke leaves a nasty residue or scum on the walls.

We have a couple these... the ones we have are ozone machines and work pretty well. Problem is that they're pretty expensive new.

I've heard vinegar and water (yeah essentially a douche) works very well on the smoke smell. this is from smoking friends who want to keep their deposit. paint seems to really soak up that smoke smell.

one thing to note, the apartments that are the least willing to clean/fix apartments prior to you moving in are also the ones most prone to keeping your security deposit by claiming all that stuff you claimed when you moved in were caused by you. I remember one apartment building that charged 3 tenants in a row for a fist sized hole in the wall, never fixed it ever, but charged each lease $150 to "fix" it. so if they refuse to do anything to make the new apartment livable, then don't be surprised when they try to find a way to charge you for all their neglected maintenance over the years.
