Ah, gotcha..

That is one nice thing about out where I live Pretty good and dark for about a foot or more deep pretty much everywhere.

Then it is clay too.

Rachel's uncle is an organic farmer (over 200 acres) and gave us some bean seeds one year. Wow were they nice! somehow they got the plant to putt all the beans on th top of the plant, so you could go through, and just grab them off the top, and it would just sprout more of them. This went on for about three weeks, new beans would come in, and so forth. He only harvested one crop off those, since he was using a machine. But I can't remember what kind they were. It was nice not having to dig through the plant to find the beans.

I garden, but mine is underground.

Still, we are able to "sustain" more than a few "households" with that.

And Mar... quoting yourself is SO bush league.

Another thing we are going to plant this year is potatos. I bought a 32 gallone galvanized garbage can. I'll punch some holes in the bottom add in 12" of soil, plant the potatos. As the plant grows you continue to add soil until you get to the top of the can (in this case about 3' high). at the end of the season you tip the can over on a tarp, harvest the potatos and then put the soil back in the can for next year.

Should be interesting.

Drum... you may have the greenest lung.... I mean thumb out of all of us.

So... with all those raised beds, you are still growing potatoes in a trash can?

My Mom always used to accuse me of trying to grow potatoes in my ears, but I think growing them in a trash can is far more worthy of scorn.

Maybe you guys should get some of those upside tomato plants you see on TV all the time. You don't even need soil.

Potatoes need a lot of soil depth, which a raised bed can not provide... unless I want to make a raised bed that is a couple of feet high. That much wood or concrete blocks or cribbing is going to cost far more that the $18 for the can and the probably $30 worth of soil that will eventually fill the can. Figure that the can and soil is good for 5 years and I think it works out.

Schmitti is going to grow Butter Beans for me.

I'm not allowed to have a vegetable garden - stupid co-op rules.

oldschool.... you need to contact the farmer.. I mentioned butter beans and got what was probably a negative response. Maybe next year. It probably would help if you came to visit.

The problem I always have wit potatos, is when I go to harvest them, the grocery stores all have 5lb bags of them for free with coupons and stuff, almost not worth the time.

Same thing is true of male babies in China, etc., but Binky still insisted on growing his own.
