On Topic: I always plant an Herb Garden + some Hot Peppers & Tomatoes. I don't have room for a full sized garden at my current place (TownHouse), but having fresh Herbs when your cooking makes a huge difference. I find that when i buy it at the grocery store it's usually pretty crappy by the time I want to use it.

Usually we plant: Cilantro/Basil/Rosemary/Thyme/Parsley/Habenaro/Jalopeno/Cherry Tomatoes

4 dozen cherry tomato plants will be planted for the enjoyment of my neighbors children 2& 5 they will eat them when they are green if I don't stop them. I grow them in a large red ceder container i built to fit on top of my garden cart. Each year I make a fresh mix of sand, loam and compost for the box.

I also have a small plot of old raspberries last year I yielded 3 quarts off a small patch.

I am going to try my hand at some peppers in containers this year too.

With three houses to take care of the lawns, bushes and flower gardens that is all I have time for.

I've had great luck with Peppers in containers as long as you have really good drainage. (You can't buy a decent hot pepper in the grocery store in my area).

My grandmother use to grow tomatoes in bushel barrels/baskets...With only saw dust for soil.....She did this for many years and I never seen a failed crop....

I have a herb garden in my backyard along with tomatoes, hot peppers, and rasberries. I also have a hops yard started. My parents have a two acre family garden with tomatoes, beans, peas, blackberries, peppers and okra. My father gets crab sheds from a crabber friend of his and tills them into the soil for the nitrates and calcium. When I was a kid he would get a tandom load of chicken manure every year from a friend of his that had an egglaying operation. Poop is great for fertilzer.

He was just lucky I was not armed when I took the picture. I think I knocked that very one off my bird feeder this morning with my Viking. I pelted him pretty good running accross my yard, and again as he tried to escape up a tree. I think he remembered he should be afraid of humans. Nothing like helping nature out.

I'm trying my hand at growing a few things this year. Hananeros, parsley, garlic, and mint (Mojito..... I don't think it's a gay drink..... Mojito....)

I got the mint plant pre-potted, and all the others have sprouted so far. I live in the city in a condo, so it's all growing on my porch. I do need to get some planters that have better drainage than what I've got so far.

Fresh mint is fantastic in cooking many things (other than just Mojitos, although those are worth it in themselves). Also mint is nearly impossible to kill off once it takes rout.

I think some of the best herbs to grow in a small garden are mint (any or multiple verities), thyme (ditto on different kinds/flavors), rosemary, basil, chives, and yarrow. All are quite hardy plants, great for cooking either fresh or dried, and will grow in tons of different conditions. The only downside to most of them is how they spread in a regular garden. Growing up we had mint migrate from the raised bed garden across the driveway and into the lawn. To this day there is still a bunch of mint growing in a few spots on the front lawn. At least it smells lovely when you mow it.
