Interesting read for company paintball outings

Company mandated paintball outings could be costly.....

Since it was mandatory participation, it in effect became a part of the job for the day and was therefore under the umbrella of workplace injury.

It all would have been moot if it were voluntary participation. A valuable point that will be made clear when I take my crew out this summer.

I wish my company had done paintball for teambuilding instead of "go to a hotel and listen to some hippie teach us how to talk about our feelings for 10 hours, 2 days in a row". There's nothing more awkward than watching one of your managers cry while he tells everyone about how he had a stillborn son 10 years ago.

For some reason, this thread put me in mind of that bizarre show where they had the office job wannabes trying to team up to clear a paper jam in a copier all the while wearing masks and being bombarded with close range paintballs.

Watching them forge forward using their briefcases and the lid of the copier as shields was pretty friggin' funny.

That said, I seem to recall hearing about one corporation that organized one of those outward bound type motivation/team building events that was mandatory and centered around some whitewater rafting.

The trick was, one of the rafts sunk or something and 6 of the 11 executive officers of the company and several of their best customers were lost in the river and never recovered.

I don't recall what happened to the company, but some time later I watched a movie that purported to be based on this story (had Alan Alda in it) and the company was sued into non-existence by the family members of the deceased.

I imagine something similar would happen if you ever made your company play paintball at Skirmish.

Now that's funny...

I'd have to think, though, that voluntary or not, it would be easy enough for an employee to convince a judge that he felt obligated to join the activity and have grounds to sue anyway. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't think like a lawyer that well...

Drum: That first show was called "My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss" and the paintball bit was hilarious. It can be found here along with some other great paintball related videos:

If it's mandatory, it's not really team building.
