yeah, we used to have a great steetcar system in the Twin Cities - but a tire manufacturer bought them and shut them down.

Lets see that thing pass crash tests favorably for most people to put their kids in.

Sorry, untill either teleporters are the norm, or helicopters replace trucks for freight, the 18 wheeler isnt going anywhere. Neither are most other trucks.

Might I add, that that car in Pittsburgh wont have those front fenders in 2 days, our potholes will eat them up.

Potholes... in the street.. i guess if we dont drill for oil, we are going to make roads out of... umm.. electricity?

No one thinks oil will be obsolete Azzy...after all, Smart Parts needs it to manufacture all their plastic markers.

However, as a continent, I think any decrease in the reliance on foreign oil would be a good thing...even it means more coal plants... How much of our money must we send overseas?

I'm all for coal to oil, but we cant build anything here in the US on even privatly owned land because it might dipute teh mating habits of some sand flea...

(If these people all believe in the sanctity of evolution, then why not let a species that only lives ina 1 block radius and is dying out.. die out? Or hey, move teh things somewhere.. put a bubble over the habitat and build a refinery around it, and the workers can feed / watch teh whatever on breaks.. or something.)

And the first thing they did after they shut them down is pull up all the rails, and melt them for scrap. Putting down new rail is such an expensive process, that it pretty much ensures that the rail could never return.

Though, I'd gladly take a bus to work, if one existed. Thats always been a problem for the USA, in that big cities have nice, well developed public transport. But as soon as you get into the suburbs, and into the country, you have absolutely nothing.

I know the hippies like the "live near you work" philisophy, but it does not reflect reality. The best jobs are in the cities, but the housing is too expensive, so the afortable housing is in the country. Thus- The far commutes that many of us have.

Yes, I'd love a public transport system like in the UK, Ireland, Europe, etc, but its a tough sell with our federated government (basically, who pays, who profits, and who governs).

I think everyone would like a short commute to work, if they had their druthers....or perhaps a 28 hour day...

You know HP, if not for having known about your seething hate for all things "hippy", when I first saw you at castle traipsing by with sandals on, a nice full beard and a hawaiian shirt: I may have mistaken you for a Hippy.

I'm no hippie, but I do lack any sense of style.
