Big Bang Theory Test...

FOXNews.com - 'Big Bang Machine' Set to Start Up Wednesday - Science News | Science & Technology | Technology News

I only have a highschool understanding of physics, but does this seem like a bad idea to anyone else???

Thoughts, insight??

That is a particle collider. It makes particles fly in a circle really fast (almost speed of light), then it makes other particles fly in that circle really fast in the opposite direction, finally it aims the 2 together so that they collide and break into pieces. The detector then tries to figure out the broken pieces in order to identify what makes an atom.

The fear is the collided material would be so dense (density is amount of matter withing a given volume, so it makes sense that 2 particles colliding in high speed would be highly compressed and dense) that it will create its own gravity field, and the gravity would be strong enough to produce a black hole, pulling everything near it into itself.

The process propegates, the now pulled in material adds to the original collision, the object now has more matter in relatively the same volume, which means it is now even denser, so it has a strengthened gravity, meaning it is now an even stronger black hole, the downward spiral continues.

I doubt it can happen. Black holes usually occur when an ENTIRE STAR collapses under its own gravity. We are merely smashing a handful of atoms.

But I'd have an orgy before Wednesday just to be safe.

Exactly, it seems wrong to me on quite a few levels. First off, creating a Big Bang in an underground tunnel? below a city??? Its also playing god, in my opinion anyway...not that we havn't done that enough already.

Seriously - Black holes are lies told by the government to corrupt Galaxies.

Air Power Vector, for the man that has climbed to the peak and wants to look down on the beaten and defeated opponents left in his wake.

The good news is, the chance of something bad happening is very small.

The bad news is, if it does there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

Suggestion: Go get drunk, laid, and whatever else you want. Worst case you have a fun night!

PS Oh yeah you can go to church to if you buy into all that crap, but like my momma always told me, live by the Science, die by the Science.

Well, the way I see it, before, we were just playing God, now, we're actually giving it a go.
