Wow. I can't even imagine the feelings and issues about abandonment those kids are facing. For their sake, I hope it's just down to their parents being inept.

Can, open. Worms, everywhere...

I can't understand what the thought process was to make the age 18, and they're now going back to amend it to 3 days. Mind boggling. Parents should face some penalty for abandoning their children. You made the decision to make a child, to bring this child into the world, and now, 16 years later, you decide they don't fit your lifestyle, or that "it's too hard"

There was a lady from Georgia who did the same thing with a 15-year-old. The kid is now back in GA with a foster family. Don't know if anything can happen to the mother.

Why on EARTH was this kind of safe-haven law even PASSED?

Abandonment of a child is going AWOL on a person's moral responsibility to care for the child. And the law is giving them a free pass on it? That's the law neglecting it's own responsibility to uphold what is right and punish those who do wrong. It ought to be patently ILLEGAL to do something like this. Abandon a child and you go straight to prison for quite a long time.

As sad as this is. I would rather see a child go to a caring home than living a hellish existence with people that don't want/care for their children.

Im sure that was the original intent.

I actually grew up in Omaha and remember this type of thing being constantly brought up. I had lots of freinds being emmancipated(SP?) right when they turned 16.

I could be wrong but I believe it was knee jerk legislation aimed at keeping things like...

girl/woman has child in bathroom and proceeds to dump baby in trash can

...sort of things from happening.
At the very least it seems to have all the hallmarks of knee jerk legislation.

I think Neb. passed legislation to close the loopholes in their law. It was well intended but people found ways to use it for their own reasons.
