I dont know how fast wrangers are but during the Michigan State Police vehicle tests the Cherokee with the straight six beat the crown vic interceptor to 50MPH, pretty damn good for a brick on wheels.

The wranglers are heavier and have a different drivetrain so they may be a little slower.

What is wrong with the Saturn? 97 should be like a rock, and easy to fix too. Ask Christian Nelson, he seems to know his Saturn repair.

First off... whatever you do, beware of all Jeeps and do not buy one!

Loved my Jeep, hated to get rid of it. Gas mileaged sucked, and tipped the balance in favor of my VW GTI ,but everytihng else was win!
Nothing more fun than driving thru water that was cresting at the base of your
windsheild( don't you try it unless you get a snorkel). The TJ is the model to go with if you are buying, in the 4.0L Straight six .
Try and get one that has the Dana 44 rear. Rubicons, and the 06 65th anniversary model{mine} came with then stock, most others it was an available option, the Rubicon has electronic lockers stock too.

Aolt of ppl said they would buy the new JKs just becuase they switched to a V6.
Actually, I read an article a few weeks back that said that the JK was just as capable, if not moreseo, offroad then the TJ.

I recall reading something about that a while back and believe it, but i would rather have an inline engine in something im going to take offroad.

On the transaxle... you get it flushed someowhere other than Saturn? If so, throw synthetic in it. Should help a bit. Plus, the pilot valve assembly on these is easy to get to, just about 20 bolts all together and you are good, should be able to get a rebuilt one for 400 or so.

Just saying

I love to see old cars get love and keep running for years, expecially if it keeps someon from buying another vehicle that gives them a payment.

Oh yeah, I'd still take the old 4.0 I6 over the 3.8 V6 that the JKs are shipping with any day of the week, the only thing the 3.8 has is slightly better highway manners. Still, they get a very undeserved bad rap. Only thing I'd trade my TJ in for is a 4-door JK.

Mmm...*Starts dreaming of a lifted 4-door with one of Honda's upcoming 6-cylinder diesels*
*Destroys keyboard with drool*

For what it's worth, Jeeps are waaaayy up there on the list of 'vehicles that run forever'. I still see early-model YJs (87-90, you can tell by the style of rollcage) around town on a fairly regular basis, and the odd CJ-7 as well. Hell, I even saw a CJ-2A, the first mass-production civilian Jeep that was basically just the old Willys Jeep without the military hardware around town. I'm pretty sure it wasn't being used to commute, but still. Anybody can work on them, and parts are both readily available and cheap-Jeeps are never scrapped when they die, they get stripped for parts. Plus, they have HUGE generations-they go about 10 years a generation, and there's loads of carryover from the previous generations. For example, the CJ-7 and the YJ had almost identical body parts, a lot of CJs get YJ body panels swapped in if they get damaged. Anybody with even the most basic mechanical training-or, hell, no training at all, just a Haynes manual and a double-digit IQ, can do things like completely replace the suspension, install axels and driveshafts, replace the transmission...the only 2 'common' mods that are out of reach for the average Jeep owner are regearing and engine swaps, and that's half because both of those require a bunch of specialized tools.
