| Jack Wagon! | Shot my first real guns this weekend
So it shames me to admit that I've never fired a real firearm before. A friend of mine got me interested a few years back and I started looking around. I went to a gun show with him in the spring and bought a Mosin Nagant M44 for like $90. It sat in my closet all summer. So this weekend I took a 3 hour drive out to his house in the country and we shot guns. It was one of the coolest things I've ever done, and it came much easier than I expected it to. Here's a list of what they introduced me to this weekend, for you gun guys. Mosin Nagant M44 - 7.62x54R Mosin Nagant 91/30 - 7.62x54R SKS - 7.62x39 Remington M700 - 300 Win Mag Mauser - 8mm Remingon 870 Police - 12ga 1850's Side by side -12 ga Ruger MKII pistol - 22LR Bernadelli pistol - 22LR Ruger revolver - 38spl/.357mag I have to say, I didn't find any of them difficult to handle. The 1850's side by side was beautiful to shoot, and the Ruger revolver had much less kick than I anticipated (we had it loaded half 38 half 357, for some variety.) Pictures (I'm the third from the left, shooting my M44) I absolutely love the muzzle flashes of the MN's. Loud and angry guns those are. The 91/30 was considerably more accurate. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ~Carter |

Nice. I bet you loved the kick of the mauser's 8mm. I know I do.

what were you shooting at? watermellons and cantaloupes are the most fun to shoot......... unless you can find tracer rounds and then shooting ether cans at dusk is pretty entertaining too.

Old empty crome moly tanks are fun to put some holes in too.

we "acquired" a bunch of mannequins and took them to the range once. we got a few stares unloading them from the truck, but everyone wanted to shoot them once the saw the heads explode

we had clays, a big 55 gallon plastic barrel, a spoon contraption they had made, an old cash register drawer which made some cool sparks when you shot it, and a broken rim from a volvo (he powerslid it sideways into a curb lol) that we hung from a tree. It was really cool to see the huge holes the mosins put in the alloy rim. The smaller cal rounds just bounced right off. I think we were shooting it from about 80 yards which was our furthest target. hummerking, manikins would be awesome! |

Your M44 may have been sighted in for having the bayonet attached. Most Mos Nagants you buy surplus are, the bayonet blocks some of the muzzle pressure on the side it is on, so they typically compensated for that by adjusting the sights. So, if you fire it without the bayonet, you will be firing slightly to the one side. Adjust your sites, and you should be able to shoot the wings off a fly!

Try it once with the bayonet in place, folded out, just to see if it shoots any different, if it shoots straighter, you will know then, if not, you wasted a bullet finding out.. I'm just saying this because mine, and just about everyone I know who has gotten one, had to adjust the sights due to that issue. Here's an article describing this: WikiAnswers - How to Sight in a mosin nagant with iron sights
