Gift Cards: insulting or practical?

I've always considered gift cards to be an extremely insulting gift. At least with cash and a quirky card, you aren't forcing someone to go to a particular store. I was talking with some of my friends, and they all see them as practical and thoughtful gifts for those people you can't think of a real gift for. I go by the idea that you should at least give a gift a try. I mean, they can always go out and exchange the thing if they don't like it, which ends up being the same deal as a gift card.

I like gift cards, mind you people usually ask me where I shop first. It wouldn't be so great to get a gift card where you cannot get anything that you actually use.

I only like gift cards if they are to a store I'll actually go to, I prefer cash though.

Ever see Seinfeld "The Deal" Jerry inadvertently offends Elaine by giving her $182 in cash as a gift and a card that reads "To a wonderful girl, a great pal, and more"?

Made me think of that.

It's a tough call, I personally hate gift cards (although if someone gives Amber a Fredrick's of Hollywood gift cert I won't complain).

I'm always all over the place for the holidays and if the person doesn't know me but gets me a GC, I always end up hunting to try and find someone to trade with me, then if the person who gave the GC to me finds out, then their offended, it's a lose lose situation.

But a Gas Card never hurts, or one to the local grocery store isn't bad. Those are common things that help out.

i always ask/know where the person shops before buying a gift card, i wouldnt buy my dad a card to barnes and noble or my mom a card to the homedepo. like titus said, a gas card is always a hit unless the person got their car taken away for a dui.

It really all depends on the store. I prefer the visa gift cards that can be used anywhere.

Insultingly pratical!

Nah, it depends who your giving it to. If ther person would be insulted by you not putting thought into the gift, then don't. If they don't give a damn, why not?

While when giving one I always think it's kind of impersonal like 'I don't know you well enough to know what you like', they're my favorite thing to receive. When people ask me I tell them I'd prefer a GC to one of a few different stores. Easier for them and I get what I want.
