| Jumps to conclusions | Home Doctor?
I've been stuck in bed for the last week due to knee pains. I need to go see the doctor. The problem is I don't have one. My old doctor has passed away more than 10 years ago and I haven't needed one since. My parents haven't been too helpful since they hate the doctor they have. I have a list of doctors from my insurance(cigna) to choose from. But how? Any of you guys been in this situation, and how did you pick? Any suggestions? |

You should never go to a physician you don't like. Since you are limited by your insurance, I would just go through the list. Pick one and then if you don't like him/her pick another next time. Knee pains? It sounds like you might need an orthopod rather than a family physician.

Consult your magic 8 ball when it came down to it for me, I just randomly picked one when I needed a physical with the foreknowledge that if the Dr. gave me the creeps I would pick a different one when I got my annual check up a year later. I recommend everyone out there who doesn't already have a doctor do this, (no matter how healthy you think you are) my brother in law got a huge run around when he sliced his foot open on a coral reef because he didn't have his own doctor that could refer him to a specialist when he got home from vacation. ta2maki, Since you're already experiencing problems I recommend you look for whichever Dr. on the list is closer to you.

Talk to your neighbors and see if there is one near you that they go to and like. My wife and I found our PCP that way and are very happy.

Thanks. I was a bit worried about the coin tossing method. The list I have has about a thousand docs, so it's not really limiting and tough to weed through. I ended up going with a random close one, but decided to try a DO instead of a regular physician(MD). I just found out about Osteopaths. Seems like it's more inline with my thinking(beliefs, morals, etc). The neighbor thing didn't work. Couple of them don't have one(they do the emergeny room thing ), one went to some shady vietnamese doc, and I don't really talk to the other neighbors.

see if you can find a physican practice (i.e. a group of affiliated docs working in the same facility). If you don't like one, you can switch to another doc without having your medical records shared unnecessarily
