It seems like this thread has attracted a whole bunch of machinists. I guess I should ask you guys the questions i asked in the other thread I made. I've tossed the idea around of leaving college to pursue being a machinist and I kinda wanted to know what kinda figures you all tend to pull in. I know most consider it private information and don't want others to know. So feel free to just drop me a PM. I'm not asking this so that I can find out how much YOU personally make compared to others, I just kinda want a general idea of what kind of money I could expect to make if I decided to go to trade school to be a machinist and what the kind of job opportunities there are.

Aside from the unmentionable things which immediately spring to mind when thinking about the guys that cry over how they absolutely MUST use the digital readout mills, that is.

I love this field, I really do. But there are days when I wonder if I really should've left my job as a night-shift convenience store cashier.
Dang you could be me! I left a nightshift ( well fired after 6 years) only diffrence is you are focusing on the CNC and I on the manuel...though I have to learn every thing the CNC guys have to learn.

Only advice I can give is to try to think of all the things that can go wrong and try to prevent them. Go over board in being sure everything is checked and double checked. go short if you need to.

That won't work... you will think of stuff that could go wrong and then mess up stuff that shouldn't go wrong.

Silly B.

I'm doing manual for the first term. Gives me a feel for the machines and how everything works, as well as how to work within tolerances.

But still... ARGH!

LOL Ran into the Vice on the Milicron but I was already afraid I had my offsets wrong so the second I heard it start to make "That sound" I hit The Big Red Button. Luckily I just had to flip the endmill. There is another guy inthe class whohas busted a bit or tool on EVERY machine he has been placed on. Me all I have done is Dull a 3/4 endmill and bust a 1inch endmill. Havent even broken a tap in a block yet while Power tapping...then agian I use so much oil it looks like a swedish porn flick.

Hehe. Has anyone left the chuck key in the lathe yet ? That's always spectacular (unless you're standing tangential to the axis of rotation).
