I agree Peter, we live in a capitalistic society. I'm all for people and companies being able to make a profit, just not obscene profits. I just wish somewhere along the line that some exec would say, "You know, $XX million a year is too much. How about a third of that instead?" One would hope that morals and ethics would kick in at some point and they would say that enough is enough. If that started a trend, then prices all over could go down. Yeah, I know, I'm living in my own little perfect world....

Owned by shareholders who are, by and large, individuals that as a group have the freedom and right to guide corporate policy under law. Compare to socialist, communist and totalitarian systems where power and money is jealously guarded in the hands of a few and answerable to none.

Ten years ago when oil was $13 a barrel did anyone (other than an oil company shareholder) say, "Poor Exxon, I feel bad for them...maybe I should send them a charitable contribution." But now that times are good for them, thanks to India, China and incompetent socialist producers in Venezuela and Nigeria, they are the bad guys? Demand is up, supply is down. Why is this so hard to understand?

A gallon of milk costs about $4.00. Milk (renewable resource): Buy cows, build barn, feed with grass and water, milk, (homogenize), buy trucks, ship.

Gas (non-renewable resource): Find oil, build $100 million floating oil rigs, drill, pump, buy $100 million supertankers, transport, build $300 million refineries, refine, ship. Gas is still cheaper than milk. I don't think we should be complaining too much.

But, I don't care at all because I'm fueling up my Subaru at $3.15 a gallon and going to:

CASTLE!!!

Have a nice weekend guys!

"shareholders who are, by and large, individuals that as a group have the freedom and right to guide corporate policy under law."

Neither the individuals nor the groups do anything but ask for more profits with a few tiny exceptions (green funds/companies)

Those stockholders drive this system, with their participation in the greedfest. When was the last time you saw a stock market information source comment on the ethics or community involvement of a company? All anyone is interested in is the price of their shares. THere is screaming and namecalling at stockholder meetings, but it's about "why didn't you meet your profit goals?"

I'm not sure where the comments on socialists and communists (quite different, actually) came from, or what actual connection they have to this issue. I'll take it as the usual bashing. Do you want to decry hippies, too? Peter

Wash your hair hippie!

Actually I do see the capitalism/communisim/socialism point.

I believe that LRRpie was contrasting several types of government where money and power was restricted to party/government hands and a capitalistic society where money and power could be in the hands of otherwise ordinary (non-government affiliated) people who had worked their way up in the business sector.

... That and he wanted to rub it in that he's going to castle and I'm not.

Our gas went down... it was almost $3.00 a few days ago, but today I filled up for $2.75 a gallon. That was at Sam's Club which is usually (and was today as well) 10 cents cheaper than everywhere else here.

Peter, maybe I was treading a bit heavily. My quip about the far lefty governments was made as a comparison to our open capitalist system. The point being that gummint regulation or ownership doesn't instill confidence that justice will be served. To the contrary, history shows that the stricter controls that governments put on the free flow of money and ideas results in less justice and equality for individuals.

I wasn't name calling or labeling. Hippies are right fine with me as long as they favor Madison over Mao.
