Army, what should I expect?

I'm really considering joining the army, and I hear stories all over, some seem true others not quite. I've done my research, but a lot of them seem to be one sided/biased.

Any and all info would be appreciated, thanks.

I watched a doccumentary last week that I thought was quite good. It looked at the choice and showed the outcome of making it for three different individuals.

Here is a brief preview. YouTube - HBO Documentary Films: The Recruiter (HBO)

Keep in mind that there are many other choices including different paths in different branches of the military, homeland security, and policing that you may also want to consider. Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Hmmm...not to thread jack, but is there anyone here who is/was an officer in the Army that can give me the same kind of info xkpxfatassxx is wanting? I'm going into ROTC in the fall, and I'd like to know what I can expect when I get commissioned.

xkpxfatassxx,
It's like any other job out there. They all have horror stories, they all have hazards and they all have people that hate it and they all have advantages and disadvantages.

schuby,
Being enlisted prior to being an officer will help you be a better leader and earn better respect.

Later,

Just parroting what I've heard (from many sources, most actually in the armed forces) but have no experience with...

Don't be the best, don't be the worst. Stick yourself right in the middle and try to escape notice during basic. After that, knock yourself out.

If you're five-foot-two and weigh a hundred pounds, guess who they're getting to hump the SAW around!

Simple advice for after you join,
Do Not: Talk about religion, politics, or cosign a loan note for anyone. These three topics will cause hate and discontent like no other.
Do: Keep your mouth shut during basic, and do what you are told. You want to be in the top 15% of your company, but still be nameless. That way you are high enough not to singled out for being an S-bag, but not sticking out in general. Being #1 has it`s own set of problems.
Do: Remember that the nail that sticks up gets pounded down, is a true statement.

Everyone`s take on the military is different, no matter if the serve side by side.

When dealing with your recruiter and MEPS, read anything having to deal with time or money, and get a copy in writing.

Other than that, shut up, read your smartbook, your clothing in your wall locker is to be buttoned as worn, and when you are training with your gas mask, do it slow and deliberately. Doing it fast only wastes time.

Are you contracted or on scholarship? ROTC does not guarantee a commission. Then you have to go through OCS, AIT, and a bunch of other specialty schools depending on the occupational path.
