Bernard Madoff has been sentenced to the maximum 150 years in prison for his multibillion-dollar fraud scheme.

U.S. District Judge Denny Chin handed down the sentence in New York on Monday.

Defense attorneys had sought 12 years, while prosecutors wanted the maximum. The federal probation department had recommended 50 years.

Chin called the fraud "staggering" and noted that it spanned more than 20 years. He says "the breach of trust was massive."

The 71-year-old former Nasdaq chairman pleaded guilty to securities fraud and other charges in March and has been jailed since.

Bernard Madoff has apologized to his family and to the victims of his multibillion-dollar fraud scheme.

The 71-year-old financier said Monday at his sentencing that he "will live with this pain, this torment, for the rest of my life."

Madoff says that he dug himself "deeper into a hole" as the scheme progressed.

Attorney Ira Sorkin says the 150 years in prison recommended by prosecutors or the 50 years recommended by the federal probation department are excessive.

Victims who lost millions of dollars earlier urged a stiff sentence for the former Nasdaq stock market chairman.

Madoff has pleaded guilty to securities fraud and other charges in March and has been jailed ever since.

No problem man. I just know that they will sometimes change the links.

The link did say this will be update as well, as it's a "happening now" story so the link is still vital

If only we could get 1/2 of that sentence to how many of the representatives in DC that sold the whole of the American people.

Bernie didt do the crime of the century, he is just taking attention away from it.

seriously. there is a huge ponzi scheme going on right now.

I love this article on WSJ: Ruth Madoff Faces Living Off a Scant $2.5 Million

"her $2.5 million settlement should give her an annual income of maybe $125,000 a year"

oh the horror.

doesn't matter what jail. he'll most likely still get superstar treatment (so i'm cynical). Michael Vick served his time at medium security Leavenworth and he had personal trainers and workout time and other special privileges. sounds like a better life than a lot of people not in prison...
