south bend lathe

I got a pretty large lathe for free, and the guy I got it from going to help me learn to use it, apparently he is amazing. It just is missing a motor.

So if I understood it right, I can get a 3phase or a single phase motor?
I have access to 3phase where its at right now, and that would be a lot easier then trying to move it. Where would be a good place to find a motor... when I figure out what size I need.

Any tips are thoughts?

Im excited :]

Im guessing that using 3 phase would be better in the 1st place? Because I guess if im wrong about that I could move it here to my house.

You can get a 3 phase converter for your house later on. I used a South Bend lathe with a converter for years.

You'll need a single phase motor if you want it in your house, unless your house has a 3 phase converter.
Lathes are fun. I use an old Clausing lathe.

If you're gonna bring it home, I'd do what others have suggested and get the converter. H.P. for H.P., a 3ph motor is way smaller than a comparable single phase motor and may have a different mounting pad (or face mount) so if space is limited single may not even be an option.

Not all 3-phase motors are the same you need to know what rpm the lathe requires to get your gear speeds right. If you don't have a lot 3-phase experience I would follow BlackRains advice and contact SouthBend.
