| Post Whore Join Date: Nov 2008 | Anyone here eat mangosteen? I can't find them anywhere
I like fruit. ![]() Anyway, I've recently been introduced to acai berry juice (delicious) and real mangosteen juice (even more delicious). All I can find out about mangosteens is that they were illegal to bring into the US, then around 2006 they became legal to import if they followed the right procedures, and some shipments started arriving. But I've never seen one in a store. Figured it couldn't hurt to ask you guys, if any of you have tried a mangosteen (and what did you think?) or if any of you have seen them at a store... I heard you can get them in small Asian stores, but I don't know if I would trust that. Just figured I'd ask. I'm dying to try one. |

Yes they're that good. You have to really watch out for the red juice from the rind though, I stained some shorts pretty badly.

It is almost strictly an Asian fruit and you are unlikely to find it in non-Asian groceries in most areas in the US. But maybe you might be find it once in a while in health food stores or something like a Trader Joe's. A large Asian grocery like 99 Ranch might have it. Why wouldn't you trust Asian stores? |

Hmm... now I'll really have to try one. I guess I'll look around for some kind of Asian market. As for trust, depends on the store. If it's some little POS store and a hole in the wall, I don't know if I would buy fruit there. It has nothing to do with it being Asian or anything like that, just the store's quality. I would assume they're just like any other food store... some suck, some don't. Some I won't buy fruit from, some I do. |

Fruits with rinds are like bottled soda in that you can generally trust them to be clean on the inside.

They look like little white slugs nestled inside a cardboard casing. I used to work in a produce department, I tried just about everything we got in. Except these, I just couldn't get the thought of slugs out of my mind. Try a granadilla (if the spelling is right) they're pretty good. You just crack it open slurp up the insides and all is right with the world. |

Bolthouse Farms makes an Acai /Mangosteen juice - should be able to find it in most grocery stores on the east cost
